The curriculum follows the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on integrating Human Values in curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The school's goal is to develop character and help the students achieve academic excellence by:
The school integrates the Ontario curriculum with values education. Using this approach, children see connections between what they are studying in their academic subjects and their own conduct and attitudes. For example, after studying shapes in their math program, kindergarten students offered insights such as: the triangle represents harmony of thought, word and action; the square signifies Right Action as the four sides of the square are equal; the circle symbolizes Non-violence, because the world is round and our aim is to have a non-violent world; an olive leaf signifies Peace and a heart is Love!
Since the school is open to children of all faiths and cultures, the children start the day with a universal prayer. Prayers promote positive thinking, self-confidence, inner tranquility and humility. This is followed by light meditation which helps to improve memory and concentration, increase self-control and intuition, and helps students to feel inner peace. These benefits are reinforced in a Yoga Program taught at the school. The yoga period is the favourite period of many students who do yoga at home and teach their parents as well.
Values are imparted through story telling, group singing and group activities, and children are taught to solve conflicts between friends in a loving manner.
Teacher modeling and parent example are, of course, crucial for the success of the program. Some parents have admitted that their children are prompting them to be kind, based on their lessons in the human values program. When one mother used some force to goad her kindergarten child to hurry up, the child calmly reminded her:
Hands are for helping, not hurting.
Many parents have commented on the positive impact that the school’s values program is having on their children and their families as a whole. For example, one parent said:
Her progress in school gives us great satisfaction. She has taught the whole family yoga and meditation. She practices her five human values...which in turn prompts us to do the same. We now have conversations on values. She has made a 'helper' tag at home and helps around the house and gets her sister to take turns. She has become a very independent and responsible girl now.
Another parent wrote:
My child is now more responsible and considerate. He is now learning to differentiate between right and wrong. He collects money for poor children by baby-sitting his little cousin for the weekends...If I happen to raise my voice, he says it is not nice to yell or scream [and that one should] speak softly.
In addition many visitors to the school are touched by the genuine nature of the students and of their practice of the five Human Values. As one recent visitor wrote:
What I liked most about the Sai School was the obvious loving energy with which the school is run. The underlying structure of discipline and necessary control of the highly energetic children is tempered with compassion, love and humour. There is so much light and fun and acceptance here. These children are blessed to be able to learn in such a fertile environment... I really appreciated the observance of spiritual values and the ongoing teachings pertaining to these values… It is impossible to not have an open heart the whole time while in the presence of either the student body or the staff.
