On Sunday, September 19th, for a second year in a row, Sathya Sai School students and their families joined thousands of others by participating in the Terry Fox Run for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run is a proud Canadian tradition, inspired by the courage and determination of Terry Fox, a Canadian hero who, despite his amputated leg and cancer, ran over 5000 kilometres across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
On the day of the event, 22 students and their families joined staff members Ms. Poddar, Ms. Das and Mr. Greenwood at Cedarbrook Park for the ten kilometre walk. In addition to the walk, participants as well as other students who were not able to join the marathon, raised an impressive $872.31 towards cancer research. This compares well with our effort last year when five students participated in the walk and the school raised $271.00. On the Tuesday following the walk, all participating students received certificates from the Terry Fox Foundation at a special assembly held at the school. More »
Sathya Sai School Students and Parents celebrate the five Human Values
They walked in unison to raise their consciousness and not money. Participants turned up at the corner of Brimley and Lawrence on Saturday, May 29 to walk the 3 km distance to Scarborough Civic Centre during this Saturday’s pleasant weather conditions. Instead of the conventional dollar sign or a political agenda, pledges at this unusual Walk for Values included virtues such as charity, volunteering, forgiveness, compassion, punctuality, appreciation, gratitude, affection, politeness, patience and the like. A program on the Sathya Sai School of Canada was aired on Vision TV, a National Canadian TV network, on May 22nd, 2003 entitled "First Look – A Lesson in Love." The producer, Mrs. Carolyn Dartnell, presented a very positive and well rounded view of the school and its unique values education program. The TV station reported that the program struck a chord in viewers right across Canada, evoking more emails for this program than any other for the current season. The program was aired again on August 21st, 2003.
Ryan Hreljac, child humanitarian, came to talk to our students on May 17th, 2001. The grade one students wrote to invite him to visit our school when they heard how he raised money to help children in Africa. He is an excellent role model for our students, and it was a great honour to have him visit our school with his mother. More »
